Features

Everything described here is available for free in Alpine version 1.8. The images are unretouched renders from the app's graphics engine.

Landscapes

  • 28 illustrated landscapes: 7 regions (mountains, forest, beach, savanna, rocky desert, dunes, sea ice) in 4 seasons.
  • Automatic choice based on your location, analysed on the phone using a built-in world map and the altitude provided with the weather.
  • Manual choice of region and season on the "Landscapes" screen.
  • Your own photo can be used as a landscape; Alpine automatically detects the sky and water in it.

Weather and animations

  • Forecasts from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) for the whole world.
  • Clouds drifting with the wind, light or heavy rain, snow, fog, thunderstorms with lightning.
  • Rain and vegetation lean according to the direction and strength of the wind.
  • Smooth transitions when the weather changes.
  • Updated at most once an hour (adjustable), only while Alpine is displayed; "Wi-Fi only" option.

Sun, moon and seasons

  • Sun position, sunrise, sunset, dawn and dusk calculated for your location and time zone.
  • The moon in its real place in the sky, with its actual phase and earthshine; hidden in broad daylight if you wish.
  • Starry nights, reflections and sparkles on the water.
  • Seasons according to the date and hemisphere; snowy landscape for two days after a snowfall where you are; mild winters in autumn colours.
  • All these calculations are done on the phone, offline.

Depth and customisation

  • Parallax across 4 or 5 layers when you swipe between home screens, with adjustable intensity and smoothness.
  • Vegetation swaying in the wind (1 to 3 layers), cloud speed, intensity of rain, snow and clouds.
  • Day and night brightness, animation frame rate, rendering quality.
  • Simulator: pick a time, weather, moon phase or date to preview the result, or lock that scene.

Map and location

  • Approximate device location (about 1 km), with your permission.
  • Or a place chosen by hand: city search, a tap on an OpenStreetMap map, or coordinates.
  • The map is only loaded on the location screen.

Artificial intelligence (optional)

  • Advanced option, off by default: create new landscapes with AI using your own OpenAI key.
  • The key is encrypted on your phone (Android Keystore) and can be deleted at any time.
  • Only the requested landscape type is sent to OpenAI, never your location.
  • Each image is billed by OpenAI to your account, at its rates. Vercolabs receives nothing from these charges.

Offline and energy saving

  • Animations, sun, moon, seasons and landscapes work without a network.
  • The latest forecast is used as long as it covers the current hour (48 to 72 hours).
  • Rendering stops when the wallpaper is hidden, and slows down in battery saver mode or if the phone gets hot.
